Gelatarrhine baboons & Nubian ibexes

Located directly adjacent to the AFRICAMBO Lodge restaurant is the enclosure for gelada baboons and Nubian ibex, which was created in 2016. Primates with distinctive “wigs” perch atop the naturalistic baboon rocks – the gelada baboons. The newly designed high rocky landscape with a waterfall recreates the habitat of the Ethiopian highlands. The magnificent wildlife experience – observing the gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia, in action – is complemented by the unique culinary offerings of the AFRICAMBO Lodge, themed around the “Highlands of Ethiopia.”
Other inhabitants of the enclosure, which is integrated into the new AFRICAMBO area, include rock hyraxes, Nubian ibex, blue-winged geese, and black ducks, all native to Africa.
The spacious grounds offer zoo visitors several opportunities to observe the animal community from different perspectives. A waterfall cascades from a height of over 10 meters down the rock face into the enclosure, and is specially illuminated during evening events.
